To archive a story, the required length of time it has to be up varies by platform. However, on platforms like Instagram, a story is automatically archived after 24 hours of being live. Users can then access it in their private archives unless the story is manually saved to highlights, where it remains visible on the profile. For other platforms, the specifics can differ, so it's recommended to check the help section or settings of the respective service to understand their archiving policies.
